Chrome extension

A count of earthquakes near you on your toolbar, and a list of the latest ones one click away. Live USGS data, no account, nothing to configure beyond picking a city.

The extension is being reviewed by the Chrome Web Store. The install link will appear here when it is approved.

What it does

• Shows how many earthquakes happened near you in the last 24 hours as a badge on the toolbar icon, refreshed every 15 minutes.
• Opens a list of the latest earthquakes with magnitude, distance and time. Each one links to its page here.
• Works for any of 34,000 cities, or your location if you allow it.

What the numbers mean

In the United States it counts earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or larger within 250 km. Elsewhere it counts magnitude 4.5 or larger within 500 km, because the USGS catalogue is complete to that size worldwide but not below it. See the methodology.

Privacy

Your chosen place is stored only in your browser. Rounded coordinates are sent to this site to fetch earthquakes and are not stored. Details are in the privacy policy.

It reports earthquakes after they are recorded. It is not an alert system and cannot warn you before shaking. In an emergency, follow official guidance.
