Live record · USGSReports quakes after they happen. Not an alert system.

About

About QuakeWatch

QuakeWatch turns the U.S. Geological Survey’s public earthquake feed into a fast, location-aware page: what shook near you, how strong it was, and how it compares with the area’s recent history.

What we do

We copy the USGS feed into our own database every minute, add distances to nearby cities, and compute simple, transparent statistics for each place. Those statistics are described on the methodology page.

What we do not do

  • We do not warn before shaking. We are not an early-warning system.
  • We do not predict earthquakes. Nobody can; see can earthquakes be predicted?
  • We do not replace official guidance from USGS, your national seismic agency or local emergency services.

Who runs it

QuakeWatch is an independent project. Guides are written from public agency sources (USGS, FEMA, Ready.gov and the Earthquake Country Alliance), cite them on each page, and show a review date.

For developers

The same data is available through a pay-as-you-go API with prepaid credits.
